CENTRE FOR GLOBAL AFFAIRS & PUBLIC POLICY AT THE 52ND GENERAL SESSION OF THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL IN GENEVA – MARCH, 2023

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is holding its 52nd General Session in Geneva from 27 February, 2023 to 4 April, 2023. CGAPP and its partners will be attending the session in coordination with our partner in our Development Hub, Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan (RSKS). In addition to an oral intervention by our Director Mr. Anindya Sengupta and our partner organisation RSKS, at the session, CGAPP will also be hosting two roundtable conferences in Geneva.

PARTICIPATION AT UNHRC GENERAL SESSION IN GENEVA

Mr. Anindya Sengupta, Director, CGAPP will be making an oral intervention on Gender Equitable Green (GEG) Label on 15 March, 2023. As nations undertake the transition to Net-Zero, there is an opportunity to embed equity goals into newly-established, clean technology ecosystems and avoid replication of structural gender inequalities. This label is envisioned as a market-driven mechanism that creates a business case and an incentive towards gender equitable decarbonisation. A gender equitable net zero transition must ensure increased participation and engagement of women with clean technology, as well as involvement of women at all levels, including decision making roles in the private sector and climate change policy-making within the government. CGAPP envisions that this could be done through the introduction of a voluntary standard of a GEG label to communicate the gender equitable nature of the industry’s transition. The label would be the first ever, one-stop solution that would integrate and quantifiably monitor equity and energy transition indicators in an interconnected manner.

ROUNDTABLE ON “ENSURING GENDER-EQUITABLE DECARBONISATION FOR ACHIEVING NET-ZERO BUSINESS OPERATIONS” – 14 MARCH, 2023

This roundtable is being organised in collaboration with the Institute of Sustainable Communities and will bring together practitioners, development sector professionals and experts to discuss the roadmap for a Gender Equitable Green Label as a market-driven mechanism that creates a business case and incentive towards gender equitable decarbonisation among businesses. Traditionally, decarbonisation and gender equity are seen as two mutually exclusive problems. There is a lack of understanding about the correlation between gender equity and decarbonization and the need for interlinked policies for both. In technocratic policies for decarbonization and energy transition towards net-zero emissions, the gender dimension is mostly absent. We believe there is a lot of scope to integrate gender equity with the energy transition so that it is seen as an amalgamated subject. Equitable decarbonisation is a pillar to just transition.

As we explore the creation of a GEG label, it is important to select the parameters that properly reflect the core components of gender equity and decarbonization as well as their amalgamation. To establish these parameters, a roadmap that overlays gender equity with net-zero transition must be developed. Monitoring, tracking, and evaluating these parameters from baseline to the finish line are key elements as that would provide data for final assessment and decision-making processes. This roundtable has been organised to discuss these aspects of the GEG label.

ROUNDTABLE ON “SUSTAINABILITY ENABLEMENT THROUGH TECHNOLOGY” – 16 MARCH, 2023

During the UN Human Rights Council 52nd General Session in Geneva, Women in Data (WiD) and the Centre For Global Affairs and Public Policy (CGAPP) are collaborating to bring together Civil Society, Business, Government and Foundations to discuss Sustainability Enablement Through Technology. You will hear from thought leaders and participate in a roundtable discussion leading to the formation of a platform to facilitate tech-enabled sustainability projects across the globe, especially in India.

As the current G-20 chair, India has identified a set of priority areas, which include tech-enabled development in sectors ranging from agriculture to education and promotion of digital public infrastructure. Participants will discuss use cases for technology regarding, education, climate, health, and technology for good at our Roundtable Conference on 16 March, 10:30 PM IST.
