CGAPP’s Tackling Plastic Pollution in the Ganga Basin project continued in the Himalayas with the all-woman team visiting Rishikesh, Haridwar and other nearby areas to conduct research, as the cities welcomed pilgrims and tourists for the Char Dham Yatra.
In the first three days the team held youth outreach programs at a school in Kankhal and interacted with close to 50 students aged 11 to 13 years old at the Raman Seva Samithi School to inform them about the ban on single use plastics and plastic pollution in Ganga. Our researchers also conducted Focus Group Discussions, at Jwalapur (Haridwar) and Kangdi, with various stakeholders in the waste collection mechanisms. The water team collected water and sediment samples from the Ganga at Brahmapuri, which will be tested for plastic contamination.
The entire CGAPP team interacted with residents through household surveys, shopkeepers, pilgrims, and tourists around Rishikesh and Haridwar.
The research team includes women PhD, graduate and undergraduate students and Project Research Lead, Dr. Mansee Bal Bhargava. Civil society organisations, such as Waste Warriors Society, Local Government authorities and others are assisting CGAPP with our project. We continue our efforts to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the Ganga and study its impacts. The Rishikesh leg of the CGAPP project culminates with the two-day Rishikesh Ganga Anti Plastic Expo on 29-30 April, 2023.
